Just thinking

I have this fantasy that my optimal experience of reality would be this:

I am born. I grow up and pursue business and administration. I learn how to work with other humans and I learn about decision making and group behavior. I am a leader. I marry a partner who is stable and low-key. Possibly someone who likes to cook and clean. I live a full life devoted to perfecting the art of leadership and hard work and am happy about what I have learned. This whole life is my childhood.

Then I am born a second time. I live my second life consecutively after my first. I retain everything I've learned from my first time, but this time I am an artist. I live a bohemian lifestyle. I never marry. I write poetry and create artwork full time. I am devoted to art and to the task of learning how to see the world with eyes that are always new and feeling with a heart that is increasingly responsive and adept. This life ends. It is my adolescence.

Finally, I am born a third time. In this life I no longer need to understand groups, to create change, or to see new things. Instead, I devote myself to the work of caring. I have already mastered the skills of leading and creating, but I set those skills aside. I am a mother. My job is to nurture my children and also the souls of those around me: my friends, my neighbors, my community. I spend time listening but not necessarily doing. I spend time experiencing and teaching others to experience. I die a final time.

I wonder why I wish I could divide my life into three different neatly boxed lives? Would those lives make more sense than one messy all-together life? Is it a question of wanting purity? Or purpose? Or maybe the goals of some of my wished for lives conflict with other lives that I wish for, and this is an imaginary way to resolve that conflict.

What does this ordering of lives mean? I think it is not a hierarchical view. Someone could read this little idea and say, well you clearly long for the third life since you have listed it last. You should pursue that ideal since it is closest to your heart. But that is not quite it. For instance, if I were to imagine living the last life only, I would feel sad for missing the first two lives. If that makes sense . . . I don't want to be "just" any of those lives. I want to be them all.

Maybe all of this is actually just a reflection about the poverty of choice. An acknowledgment that choosing one path means giving up other paths. I know that people can do more than one thing in life, and that I still have time, but it feels like as I grow older that somehow I am less and less bendy and that there are parts of life that only come around once to decide on. I can't go back and be a bohemian now without giving up the stability and privilege of my house and marriage. So I've made that choice, and it's a powerful choice (one that I enjoy) that I'm unlikely to change and more and more likely to settle into permanently.

My friend and I were visiting our local county shelter back in June when she decided she wanted to adopt a cat. Her mom had gotten rid of their family cat a while back and she can have cats in her new apartment (their requirement is that they're declawed but we have absolutely zero intention of honouring that stipulation) so we went home with not just one kitten, but two brothers! To my credit, I picked out and named the one with white colouration and we loved his brother so much, too, that we couldn't separate them and we both ended up naming the tiger.

Without further adieu, Xander and Parker! )

Hi! It's been awhile since I've posted pics of our new kitty Evy. She is 6 months now and adorable! She is such a little mischief maker and is so curious. With my other cat Jasper he used to be sneaky curious but with Evy she is so obvious. You hear something go 'bang' or another odd noise and you know it's Evy being up to no good. Well enough blabbering and onto cute pics! xposted

Shopping While Muslim + more on Islamophobia
by اسکندر ([info]wiped)
at November 4th, 2009 (12:10 am)

As a follow-up to Shopping While Black, here's Shopping While Muslim:

In Lilburn, GA, a mosque seeking to expand and add a cemetery to accommodate its members faces opposition from local non-Muslims. There is a good, detailed article about that here. Here are some direct quotes from residents as to why they oppose the mosque expansion:
  • “This is about hurting our community, this is about hurting our kids”
  • “I just don't like Muslims and I don't want them taking over our neighborhood”
  • “This is not what Lilburn needs. This is a Christian community, and they are anti-Christian.”
(real quotes from CBS Channel 9 and The Gwinnett Daily Post) According to the CBS piece, three people also told the reporter that they opposed the mosque because--in their own words--they were racist.

A completely separate mosque in neighboring Lawrenceville, GA is also facing a similar issue, with residents holding similarly racist views, saying things like "They are trying to turn a neighborhood into a mosque."

For those in the metro Atlanta area who wish to get involved in supporting the mosques and fighting Islamophobia, please leave a comment or message me - we need your support, and have an event planned for this month (November).

In other recent news, please read about the censorship of an article about "how white gay activists can become complicit with this agenda by painting Islam as inherently homophobic and misogynist, and appointing themselves as the saviours of non-white queers." For more on this subject, see the following:
-OutRage!ous Censorship of "Gay Imperialism"
-Whitewashing gay culture in Lebanon
-'Stop using Palestinian gays to whitewash Israel's image'

Finally, here is a great book review titled "Orientalism and Islamophobia in the American left," which deals with anti-Arab racism and Islamophobia not just in the American right, but amongst white liberals and intellectuals as well.

I’m a 20-year-old girl, and I’ve been dating my boyfriend, who is 23, for two years. From the get-go, he has known that I am bi, and like most straight guys, he’s happy to be with a girl who likes girls.
The thing is, I am too shy to go out and hit on a girl. Getting a man was the easy part, but getting a girl who is willing to fuck around not only with me but also with my boyfriend is a daunting task. I encourage my boyfriend to talk to women since he is ...
